Luminous Abstractions is a solo show by Marco Coching that presents a unique form of visual storytelling. It consists of paintings that exhibits the unrestricted expressions and vivid movements of colors and light that elicits emotions and energy.
Marco “Macoy” Coching is a Fine Arts graduate from University of Santo Tomas, and the grandson of National Artist and Dean of Filipino Illustrators, Francisco V. Coching.
I was able to get a chance to have a chat with Coching and asked him about his art show and learned more about him and his passion in painting.
What do the Luminous Abstractions symbolize?
It symbolizes light and energy. All my paintings are made with energy. I use a lot of highlights and colors that makes the painting glow or illuminate.
What does the art aim to say to the audience?
I want my art to be different. Before, sabi nila gaya-gaya lang ako sa iba (they said that I just imitate others). But now, I discovered this luminous art style that I think I’m the only one doing this style.
Who or what inspired you to create your Luminous Abstractions?
Actually, I’m always excited to do this kind of paintings. Nage-enjoy ako kasi unique and dahil sa magic niya after ko siya matapos (I enjoy it because it’s unique and because of the magic after I finish them). I think my lolo (grandfather - Francisco V. Coching) is guiding me always sa art ko (with my art). My lolo is my idol and my inspiration.
What made you realize that painting is your passion?
Since I was a kid, I love to paint. I think it’s in my blood. Natural siyang lumabas (It came out naturally). But I enjoy doing abstract painting. I’m more free doing this style. Painting is now my work. I’m using my talent to also earn money and I think I will do this forever.
Do you plan to expand on your art by also following you grandfather’s footsteps in the Komiks Industry and create you own comics?
Yes, I’m about to do a collaboration with Viva on bringing back my grandfather’s story back to life. We are planning to do modern versions of my grandfather’s stories into comics again. I’m the only one in the family who grew up with my lolo, that’s why I know almost all his stories.
Aside from painting, what other interests and hobbies do you have?
Well, I do a lot of sports. I used to compete at road bike races at triathlon but now I regularly just bike everyday for exercise only. And I love playing basketball.
Favorite basketball team?
In PBA, San Miguel (Beermen) ever since I was a kid. In NBA, this year would be Toronto Raptors because of Kawhi (Leonard). I like him ‘cause he’s quiet but excels in his talent. Humble star.
Aside from the upcoming collaboration with Viva on your grandfather’s story, what else is next for you in the future?
Well, more painting exhibits. More progress on my paintings. Hopefully I can discover new styles and compose more nice designs for my paintings.
Lastly, what advice or tips can you give an aspiring artist?
Never give up. Sometimes there are downfalls. Just continue what you love to do and eventually you will succeed. Also, never listen to negative people, they will just pull you down.
I was able to observe and admire his paintings at the exhibit. As I was gazing at the artworks, I could feel the energy and aura that the paintings have on them. Each piece gives various vibes, as there are paintings that deliver strong energy, and some show calmness and harmony.
Of course, I have my own favorites:
The art exhibit runs from September 4 - 17, at Galerie Joaquin, Power Plant Mall, Rockwell Center, Makati. And the artist reception was held last Tuesday, September 11.
