UST Junior Finance and Investment Executive (UST JFINEX), the official organization of the Finance Management students, held a general assembly event last night, September 29, at UST Medicine Auditorium, using "superhero" as their theme, entitled, Origins: The Journey of the Extraordinaries.
The event served as an introduction for the freshman students to the Finance Management, and at the same time the oath taking of the organization’s student officers for this school year. It also allowed the students to showcase their creativity and talents through contests and by performing on stage using an assigned an iconic superhero per section.

Their were three contests for this event; poster-making contest, trailer/teaser video contest, and on-stage performance. Each section had a superhero assigned to represent their block. It was divided into two categories, with the first and second years competing against each other, assigned with DC Comics superheroes (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, and Hawkgirl), and the third and fourth years against each other, assigned with Marvel superheroes (Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, and Spider-man). So we didn’t have a Marvel vs DC moment last night.
The UST-JFINEX invited me as a guest to judge the contest. It was my first time picking up the task to judge in an event, and I admit, it was an exciting experience and a enjoyable job. I was really pleased that I was chosen for this, thanks to being an admin of Marvel and DC Universe Philippines, a Facebook group for the fans of Marvel, DC Comics and other comics as well.
The first contest was the poster making contest. Some were good, some were okay, some needed more into it, but one poster really stood out for me, the Doctor Strange poster by 4FM2. I can tell someone from the class really has a skill in using photoshop. The concept was really inspired by the film’s poster, and the characters blended with the background smoothly as if it was an actual movie poster. Other posters I personally liked were Batman, and Spider-man, which captures the tone their superheroes have.
The trailers making contest let the students use their creativity in how they would interest the audience with a 90-second video. I found a lot of them entertaining, either due to good cinematography or from a comedic result in their work. Some really have proven their skills in directing and in video editing, with the transition and visual effects in their videos.
In showcasing their on-stage talents, the students were very entertaining in delivering their performances. They acted, sang, dance, and awed and humored the audience. But what amazed me very much were the fourth years' shows. There were five fourth year section that competed and all of them were astounding. The props and background were made with heavy efforts in it, as they gave a livelier stage. Their dance moves were also well choreographed and their acting were on point. They had me saying "Wow!" and that wasn't an overstatement. My personal favorite was Spider-man (4FM5) and Doctor Strange (4FM2). The Spidey team was very energetic and had a good way of telling the story, and Doctor Strange teams with it's excellent stage creativity.
On the DC side, the freshmen and sophomores, my favorite was the Batman (1FM1). This team narrated a Batman story in an amusing way while having to give the crime chaos Gotham has. Good costumes and choreography. I like the one playing the Joker, impressive make up and he did good being in character, plus their Batgirl was looking really fine. I also thought that Superman (1FM2) and Green Lantern (2FM1) did a really interesting play. With 1FM2's story-driven performance, as they focused more on telling the story in remarkable manner, and 2FM1's Hal Jordan story mixed with a modern classroom setting.
In the end, for the DC, The Flash (1FM5) won the poster making contest, Green Lantern (2FM1) was given the Hero of the Night award, and Batman (1FM2) won the trailer making contest and was crowned as the champion for their performance.
For the Marvel, Doctor Strange (4FM2) won both the poster and video making contest, and Spider-man (4FM5) took home both the Hero of the Night award and the championship award for their performance.
I admit that being a first time judge, this was a bit of a challenging task. It was new for me, I'm not fully sure what to expect. But I would be so pleased if I will be invited again to judge another competition. Plus, I got my former professor, Ma'am Magbata to shake my hand and thank me... I wasn't one of her best students.

University of Santo has always been one of my favorite places. I visit it every now and then, during events such as Paskuhan, or whenever I feel like going for a jog around the field. It always feels like paying a visit to a second home. With this, it’s been one of my goals to return to my old school as a special guest. Being invited to an event and have a purpose and role during the program, whether a speaker, or a performer. So it was truly an honor when I got invited to judge a college competition. Plus it simply was an awesome experience.
Work it, Hela!
