My Top 5 2016 Movies

I’ve seen tons of movies this year and some of them were great, some were pretty okay, and some were just terrible. But on this list, I’ll throw in my personal top five favorite movies of 2016.

5. Doctor Strange

A Marvel movie. Marvel is pretty good in giving people a great film, so it’s not hard to believe that one of their movies will make it to this list.

Doctor Strange is an introduction to the mystical side of the MCU. A mind-bending film that will sure to leave you with a great cinematic experience.

This is about a top-class neurosurgeon, Doctor Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), who experienced a fatal accident that left him with injured hands. In search for new ways to heal himself, he ventures to Nepal and meets The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), and gets his eyes opened to the mystic arts and a reality larger than the world.

Why I like this movie?
  • It’s a Marvel movie. I love Marvel.
  • The effects were great. City bending, warp portals, the fight scenes, everything was amazing.
  • Cumberbatch was perfect for the role.
  • The rest of the cast was also excellent.
  • This was a sure way to get us hooked to MCU’s mystical side.
  • Just enough humor without trying to force them.
  • Time gem!
  • And lastly, “Dormammu, I’ve come to bargain.”

4. Deadpool

This was Deadpool trying to redeem himself from that awful version in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Ryan Reynolds returned as Deadpool, and this time he’ll make sure that you’ll want more from the Merc with the Mouth.

Why I like this movie?
  • It’s an R Rated film, so we got to see some bloodshed.
  • Deadpool is an awesome character. The Merc with the Mouth is not your regular superhero, he’s an anti-hero so he didn’t play by the hero rulebook in this film.
  • The action and fight scenes were superb.
  • Deadpool’s kill count.
  • The movie will make you laugh.
  • They gave justice to the character and even dissed the X-Men Origin: Wolverine version and also the Green Lantern movie as well, which was also starred by Reynolds.
  • Hilarious references and easter eggs.
  • Reynolds was awesome.
  • Salt-N-Pepa’s Shoop.
  • The fourth wall was broken.

3. Suicide Squad

What would you do if a threat to destroy the world appears and Superman isn’t there to save anyone? Well, you form a task force team consisting of super villains, of course.

Suicide Squad is team of super villains formed by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), consisting of Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), Katana (Karen Fukuhara), El Diablo (Jay Hernandez), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Slipknot (Adam Beach), and their leader, Colonel Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman). They are set to face the witch goddess, Enchantress (Cara Delevingne).

Why I like this movie?
  • Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Beside her rocking body that she kept flaunting the whole film, she did a great job playing her role. It’s hard not to love her, with the way she constantly threw punch lines and kept the movie alive.

  • Harley Quinn’s craziness is what DC needs to lighten up the seriousness.
  • It’s a group of bad guys forced to do good.
  • I didn’t expect the villain. It was a twist since Enchantress was marketed as part of the squad.
  • Enchantress' sexy belly dance moves.
  • We get to see cool fight scenes.
  • The music. From the classic rock, Bohemian Rhapsody and Ballroom Blitz, to the modern Rick Ross’ rap, Purple Lamborghini and Twenty One Pilot's Heathens.
  • Jared Leto’s Joker was good even though his role wasn’t essential to the plot of the story and not enough screen time as I expected.
  • The Dark Knight (Ben Affleck), The Flash (Ezra Miller), and Aquaman (Jason Momoa) made cameo appearances.
  • And lastly, Margot Robbie again.

2. Saving Sally

This indie film took 10 years to finish and it was worth the wait.

Saving Sally is a story by Charlene Sawit-Esguerra and directed by Avid Liongeren. It stars Enzo Marcos (Marty), Rhian Ramos (Sally), TJ Trinidad (Nick the Dick), Bodie Pascua, Carme Sanchez, Sharmaine Cantenera Buencamino, and Archie Adamos.

Saving Sally is about Marty, an aspiring comic book artist who is in love with his bestfriend, Sally, but she has a monster for parents and an inconsiderate boyfriend. Marty must find ways to save the love of his life from the big bad world.

Why I like this movie?
  • It has great visuals. I just love how artistic the team was with this film.
  • It’s a typical love story but you’ll appreciate the humors, the easter eggs, the mixture of live action and animation, and everything in it.
  • The cast was awesome.
  • Marty is a very relatable character. I can easily sympathize and empathize with him.
  • It’s a film about a geek. I’m a geek.
  • Rhian Ramos! She’s my number one Pinay celebrity crush.

1. Captain America: Civil War

One of the most anticipated films in 2016. Captain America: Civil War is loosely base Marvel comics’ story arc Civil War. It features a dispute between two of the most iconic and biggest Marvel superheroes, Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), which resulted to the formation of two teams led by the two heroes.

Why I like this movie?
  • It’s heroes versus heroes. What’s not to like about that? We get to pick which side we are on. #TeamCap or #TeamIronMan. I was on Stark’s team, btw.
  • Marvel knows how to make heroes fight each other.
  • Tons of action. There were a lot of amazing fight scenes, most notably the one on the airport where the two teams finally fought.
  • Marvel knows how to make us laugh.
  • It stirred our emotions and broke our hearts as we sympathize for Tony Stark during the climax.
  • Heroes returned and heroes were introduced.
  • The actors were amazing. Of course, we’ve seen Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), and many others perform as their characters. We’ve already seen how excellent they were, and they didn’t fail us in this film. The new comers to the MCU, such as Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Daniel Brhul (Helmut Zemo), and Martin Freeman (Everett K. Ross), were also incredible. They gave more reasons why we should love this movie.
  • The plot twists about Zemo’s motive and strategy, and the truth about the death of Stark’s parents.
  • It set us up for more future Marvel movies.
  • And of course, Spider-man! We finally welcomed our favorite web-swinger to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

So there you have it! That’s my top five 2016 movies. What’s your top movies that came out this year?
