Video Game Quiz Night

After nine years, I finally participated in a quiz night again.

Okay, so the event itself was already over a month ago, but I realized that hey I still want to talk about it because I had a truly fun experience and it was all about video games and I want to do more trivia events again in the future. Still, I should have written about this sooner, just going to blame my personal mixture of busy work and life schedule and just raw and unfiltered laziness and procrastination.

Anyway, video game quiz night!

PRESS START!!!

For months, I had been planning to attend and participate in a quiz night event again, since my last one was in 2016 when I was invited to join a trivia night about Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. I had been looking through social media platforms regarding event posts since June this year, and trying to see which ones would interest me. I managed to see topics that I like such as Lord of the Rings, Marvel Cinematic Universe, Adventure Time, and of course, video games, but I just could not seem to find or set time for them. And then, last October 25, I stumbled upon this post about an event called Let’s Play!: A Quiz about Video Games by AboutQuiz, which would be held that very same day at Ukiyo Cafe Bar. Since my schedule was free that day, I immediately inquired about it and decided to attend it later that day.

So event night…

I attended as a solo joiner which meant that I would be grouped with the other participants who registered as solo as well. I was directed to a table with two other individuals, who ended up becoming my teammates for the night. Right away, we chatted about about video games and basically just getting acquainted with one another. And since we went to this event individually, not knowing each other, we decided to call ourselves “Team Random", because we are just a trio of random people. And I personally was fond of that team name because it made me think of the “Random” option in a character selection part that is usually found in fighting games, and how I felt like all three of us were randomly selected that way. Oh and there were three more groups for that night; Nomads, Team Rocket, and Respawn Rangers.

When the program began, we were briefed on the rules and the mechanics of the game. The contest consisted of multiple rounds with different categories per round, such as Plot and Characters, Retro Games, and Music.

Coming into the event, I was confident that I would be able to share and contribute to the team, but maybe in a small amount at least, and I still felt that many of the participants would outgeek me. But pleasingly, when the questions came, I did better than I expected I would. At times, I just go ahead and write down answers that I was a hundred percent sure was correct, and I got a lot of them right, in all fairness. Like I remember correctly jotting down the names of the two masks from Crash Bandicoot, which are Aku Aku and Uka Uka, the song Megalomania from Undertale, which game the trophy achievement “Best Fries in Town” was from and the answer to that is Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and I successfully rearranged the Paul W. S. Anderson Resident Evil live action films in the chronological order. A teammate of mine even quipped that I was carrying the team during the first few questions, which I felt personally validated as a gamer, but hey, there were still a lot of questions that I didn’t know the answers to, and that was when I was thankful for my teammates’ knowledge and gaming expertise. Like they know more a lot about retro games than I do, or that in some games, I just didn’t know the lore and the in depth trivia of, or certain aspects like real life history and geography connected to the games, like we practically complemented one another. But overall, all three us managed to work together, contributed, and each helped gather points for the team, despite being essentially still strangers to one another at that point. And none of us were selfish, like if one knows the answer, we let that one take the shot. If we would have to have a discussion first, we just throw what we know, then talk about it until we make a decision. And we were cool and didn’t blame one another if we would get an answer wrong. And fortunately, we were able to get the lead very early on. I would just say, as a team, our category weakness was online multiplayer games, but luckily, that was just one category.

Team Random

Ultimately, we won the quiz night (Alexa, play Final Fantasy Victory Fanfare). It felt really amazing because I can now say that I'm a certified gamer. Certainly gained a lot of exp points from this quest. And yeah, we also got an item reward for winning, a bottle of tequila, which my team didn't want so they let me have it, and which I ended up sharing with Nomads.

And oh! The venue was the vibe. They served us a free drink that each participant can avail. And the cafe bar is simply just a great place to chill and drink. Will definitely return to this place whenever I'm looking for a nice place to hangout around the area.

So yeah, I guess that was it for my video game quiz night experience.
