My Top 5 Horror Films that Scared Me the Most

Jump scares, sinister music, eerie sound, ominous atmosphere, iconic horrific entity… these are some of the things that make a horror movie terrifying.

Watching horror films is a good and thrilling way to enjoy this spooky season. So this Halloween, I want to talk about my list of horror films that scared me the most.

Here are the Top Five Horror Films that Scared Me the Most:

5. The Ring (2002)

I remember when this came out around two decades ago, and it instantly became an icon to the horror industry, as well as pushing the Asian horror genre further into the mainstream level.

The truth is, I’ve never even watched any of the The Ring films, as my parents thought it might have been too scary for me because I was just around eight years old when this American adaptation came out, so they didn’t let us, my siblings and I, watch it that time, especially the original Japanese version, since I heard it was even scarier. But since it was really popular and everyone was talking about it, making spoofs and parodies, and seeing it almost everywhere that time, I managed to absorb a lot of images, clips, and trailers about it. So the terrifying Sadako/Samara got stuck in my poor eight year old brain.

This film is about a cursed videotaped that when you watch it, this ghost girl would come out of the TV and kill you. So whenever I see a clip of Sadako, or even just an image of her back then, I feared that she was going to come out of our TV and that was just game over for me.

4. Shutter (2004)

I watched Shutter a long time ago, and what I remember is that it gave me that random fear that someone unexpected might appear in the photos I take, photos I’m in, or actually just any photo for that matter.

Shutter is a Thai horror film about a photographer seeing mysterious figures from the photos he takes that he would soon realize was something from his past coming back to haunt him.

This movie freaked me out, especially the plot twist at the end. I’ve been more cautious about taking pictures. And this film would have given me the creeps if I ever feel something heavy on my shoulders. Just imagine seeing yourself in a picture with a ghost girl sitting on your shoulders.

3. Dead Silence (2007)

Dead Silence is one of the horror films that I believe doesn’t get the praise it deserves. It is an underrated horror film about a dead ventriloquist and some creepy dolls.

I watched this film at random for some reason when I caught it on cable TV, and I watched this alone. I used to regret ever seeing this because of how much Mary Shaw's face frightened me. In the film, Mary Shaw was a ventriloquist. And when she died, she requested that they turn her body to appear like a dummy, so I got the image of her ghost form, which was a hybrid of a human corpse and a dummy doll, stuck in my mind for weeks after seeing that film.

Luckily, there is an easy way to avoid getting killed by her, just don’t scream, basically. Still, this film haunted me for quite some time.

2. Insidious (2010)

I remember watching this and thinking that I’m old enough to not get scared by this film because I was already in collage when I saw it. But I was dead wrong.

This film tackled out of body experience, and during that experience the body becomes an empty shell that spirits and demons would attempt to steal and take over. So the idea of out of body experience and sleep paralysis became a scarier thought for me after seeing this movie.

This film is honestly a really good one, one of the best horror films I’ve seen so far, And I just love and hate the jump scares in this film, like the demon’s face popping out of nowhere while they were talking, and that was very random and unexpected as there was no build up for it, or the ghost family with the shotgun smiling all of a sudden. Those scenes gave me nightmares. I also like the subtle things here, such as the dancing ghost boy standing facing the wall. And of course, the tiptoe by the window song will never not be creepy because of this.

I showered right after watching Insidious, and I swear I couldn’t keep my eyes shut for a second. I even had a hard time sleeping thinking some ghosts or demons might want to take over my body because of this movie.

1. Coming Soon (2008)

This movie was just too much for me. I regretted watching this to be honest. I think the movie was great. It had a great story, a truly frightening ghost antagonist, and a compelling plot twist, but this film freaked me out the most.

Coming Soon is a Thai horror film which is similar to The Ring, in the same way the characters watched a cursed film and then they would be killed after.

I just can’t forget how much Shomba, the antagonist on this film (at least what we initially thought of), stayed in my mind for a long time, and honestly, it may still freak me out if I think about it. Plus the way she played games with her victims’ psyche was just torture. She played with their minds and baffled them on which ones are real and which ones are not. This added so much horror for me as I will be scared if I experience a scenario where my mind will play tricks on me.

And yeah, I really thought that the plot twist about the actual Shomba surviving her execution and that the real sinister ghost was the actress that played her in the film (the one that is part of the story) was truly amazing.

I feel like talking about Coming Soon would reignite the nightmares and the images in my mind that haunted me before.

So these are the top five horror films that scared me the most. What are your top five horror films that scared you the most?

Happy Halloween!
